Are Coloured Gemstones More Valuable?

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”

The white sparkly gem has always been the most popular gemstone, deemed to be the most coveted. But are these white diamonds really the most precious of all gemstones? Not necessarily. Let’s take a look at other coloured gemstones, which may often be more valuable.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many coloured diamonds which would be more valuable than the highest-grade white diamond! This is because of the extraordinary rarity of natural coloured diamonds. Extremely rare natural colours include: pink, blue, red, orange, purple, green. Top quality coloured diamonds are generally the most valuable of gemstones. A 1ct D Flawless round brilliant diamond can be valued for approximately USD20,000 while a 1ct Vivid Pink diamond can be closer to USD1,000,000!

Besides diamonds, there are a number of other precious coloured gemstones that can be more valuable than white diamonds. For example:

  • Top quality Burmese Rubies and the best of Colombian Emeralds can reach over USD1,000,000 per carat for the best pieces.
  • The colour-changing variety of Chrysoberyl called Alexandrite and the “Paraiba Neon Blue” variety of Tourmaline can also reach dizzying price levels for the finest stones.
  • Vivid Red Spinels are also extremely rare, and prices of top stones can be equivalent to traditional Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
