KUALA LUMPUR, 23 NOVEMBER 2013
La Putri, fine jeweller to Asia’s social elite, celebrities and members of the region’s royal families, proudly unveils the winner of its inaugural La Putri Outstanding Jewellery Designer Competition 2013 today. The winner will be receiving her award at the La Putri 40thAnniversary Gala Dinner held at Shangri-La Hotel this evening.
The competition, which features former Miss Malaysia and Beam Artist Ms Andrea Fonseka as the official Face of La Putri, concluded with the Malaysian winner as Ms Teo Yee Ying from Mersing, Johor, currently residing in Kuala Lumpur.
“We were very pleased by both the number and the amazing quality of entries we have received. All the designers have shown great potential and creative flair in their work. Our winner has shown her inspiration from the classic Art Deco period in designing a stunning, original contemporary piece for our quintessential Modern Asian Woman, Ms Andrea Fonseka. We hope the prize money and the trip to the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show will further inspire her to pursue her passion and develop her talent – and to become a world-renowned Malaysian jeweler designer” said Ms Goh Ying Li, Director of La Putri.
Ms Teo’s winning design entry was inspired by Andrea’s classic Oriental beauty, and she wanted to incorporate ‘Evergreen’ elements from the Art Deco design period to create a versatile, wearable set of contemporary jewellery for Ms Fonseka, which she has artfully done.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, La Putri conceptualized the competition to discover, recognize and nurture young jewellery design artists, who are passionate about their field and highly dedicated to the art and craft of creating original pieces of fine jewellery.
The prize money of RM10000, one of the highest amounts of cash prize offered regionally for such competitions will enable Ms Teo to further her education in the design field. Ms Teo will also have the opportunity to attend the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show in March 2014, sure to be a great learning experience.
Using rubies, the traditional gemstone for 40th anniversaries, competing designers created a concept for a piece/set of jewellery for Ms Andrea Fonseka – the official “face” of the design competition and one of the judges on the esteemed panel of judges.
Joining Ms Fonseka on the panel are Ms Goh Shuet Li, Director of La Putri, Ms Goh Ying Li, Chief Designer and Director of La Putri and four editors from the leading local luxury publications.
The design entries were judged based on four criteria; namely the design concept, originality, creativity and market appeal of the design. After shortlisting the design entries to 6 finalists, the finalists had to go through rigorous rounds of interviews before the winners were decided.
